Who's your favorite?

Standing in line at a grocery store with my girls giggling uncontrollably a man asks me "Have you picked a favorite?" I laugh at him not really thinking he is talking to me. He makes eye contact with me and asks again "If I have picked a favorite?" I stare at him, not knowing what to say to this absurd question. He then cracks a smile and tells me that he has twin daughters that are 16. He and his wife used to joke about picking a favorite kid in case they ran off in opposite directions and you could only go after one or the other. I laughed. It was a funny thought. What if my girls ever did run off in separate directions? Who would I chase after?

A few weeks later I find myself thinking back to that conversation with that stranger. I am sitting on the couch as I often do with my Charlotte. I gently rub my fingers up and down her arms and across her back. She loves to be touched and slightly tickled. (I used to lay for hours on my mom's lap while she did this to me as a child) I think I would run after Charlotte. She is my other half. We are so alike. She is my favorite. A few moments later Addison walks up and slips her tiny little hand around my finger. "Mommy please" she says. So I follow her into the bathroom. She sits me down on the bathmat and stands in front of me. She rubs my blush brush across my face and smiles the most amazing smile you have ever seen, "Mommy pretty". I see her watching me at times, wanting to be just like mommy. And I think nope she is my favorite. Then I am reminded if these two little girls ever ran off in different directions I'd had better learn to be in two places at one time because they are both my favorite.
Mommy's have that ability right? It's like one of our super powers.

Totally! I used to wonder about that too. Fortunately I have never had to choose because I wouldn't know what to do. Great post!

I have no idea what I'll do when they both run in different directions! I'll probably stand there and scream. Or run after whoever is slowest and then go after the other. Or maybe I should do it the other way around. Oh lord, I don't know. I think I'll just keep them on leashes....

Yep...one of our super powers. You scoop up whoever you can get to first and then head in the direction after the other one! I have had to do this, although not out in public, just out in front of our house for all the neighbors to see!

I've thought about this favorite idea a lot lately and have decided something. I DO have favorites. Because my kids are different they become my favorites for different reasons. My favorite couch snuggler kid, my favorite knock knock joke kid, my favorite hangout-and-shoot-the-breeze kid...you get the idea.

That said, if they all went in different directions, I think I would just have a melt down and hope SOMEONE close by had the brains to help me out!!

GREAT post!!

Now there's a thought! I think that not only can we be in two places at one time but I think we have go go gadget arms! So fear not-- PLUS-- we've been blessed with wonderful children so why would they want to run in different directions anyways? *snicker-yeah right!

What a FABULOUSLY SWEET post - I just loved it! It was like reading a darling little book that I didn't want to put down - so sweet!

Over the years I often have had dreams about being caught in a situation where I would have to choose/figure out how to save one child and leave the other behind to do so - horrible anxiety dreams. It was always my greatest fear - that I would have to leave one to save the other. Thank God I have never had to make that choice (my twins are now 16).

Thanks for this wonderful post - Have a good Mother's Day - see ya - Kellan

I'm back on tonight from a long break and read all of your posts on this page. I have to comment to this one as I won't have time to comment on all of them. This post was amazing. I've often thought about how much I love each twin when I hold them individually, and as you said, they are both my favorites for different reasons. Love, love, love them!
